Some General Do's and Donts
- Always sit up straight at the table. Do not lean, or sit in an awkward prosition
- When you are not eating, your hands should be on your lap, or on the table with the
wrists on the edge of the table. You should not have your elbows on the table while
eating.
- Do not chew with your mouth open
- Do not make loud noises when you eat
- Do not talk when you have food in your mouth.
- Always completely chew your food. Do not swallow it quickly without chewing it first.
- Do not make slurping sounds when using a soup spoon
- Do not blow your soup. If it is too hot, wait for it to cool and then drink it.
- If you spill your food off your plate, pick it up with a piece of silverware and place
it on the edge of your plate.
- If a piece of your silverware falls off the table onto the floor, if you can reach it,
pick it up and ask the server for a clean one. If you cannot reach it, tell the server you
dropped a silverware, and ask for a clean one.
- Do not leave the table during the course of a meal. If you need to go to the bathroom,
ask to be excused. When you return, apologise that you had to leave.
- If you cannot reach an item you need, politely ask the person nearest to it to pass it
to you. E.g. "Could you please pass me the salt and pepper after you've used
them?"
