Use of the Napkin

Background Information

Hmm... Why would one use the napkin? Did you know that it was originally used so that any food that was spilt during the course of the meal, it was the napkin that was used to be cleaned up? The napkin should be used only to dab your lips, and should not be dirtied. The napkin should be on your lap for the entire duration of the meal while you are seated.

Start using the napkin?

  1. Once you are seated, wait until the host of the table unfolds the napkin. This is a sign that indicates that dinner will start being served.
  2. Remove the napkin from your place setting, unfold it and place it on your lap. Depending on the size of the napkin, you either unfold it completely, or unfold it in half.

Finised use of the napkin?

  1. Once you've finished your meal, wait until you see your host place the napkin on the table. This is a sign that dinner is over.
  2. Place the napkin loosly on the table beside your plate. The napkin should neither be folded neatly, nor should it be crumpled/twisted

If you need to leave the dinner table during a meal, place the napkin on the chair. Once you return, place the napkin again on your lap as if you were starting the meal.

By not placing the napkin on the table after you finish your meal, people would think that your napkin had been excessively dirtied, or even worse, that you are trying to run away with the table linen!!
